Other companies actually allow flexible schedules by the week, where the employee can spread out his number of hours per day as long as he meets the weekly quota. As long as the employee reaches the minimum number of working hours, he can already time out and call it a day. Not much needs to be said about this period because the employee is already at the office, working hard (we hope!). Core time is where the company makes its bread and butter. Thus, the employee can wake up a little later than the 8-to-5ers, still have time to cook breakfast and send off their kids to school, and generally breathe a little easier because of the faster commute away from rush hour traffic. In general, local companies peg the flexible start time from 8 – 10 am. Start time is flexible up to a certain range. (picture from Kentucky Transportation Website) There are three main parts which make up Flexi-time: Start, Core, and Stop Time. In general, the Start and Stop times are flexible, but the bulk of the day or “Core” time is where the necessary work gets done. Let’s compare it to the Traditional 8 to 5 (or fixed schedule) and weigh their pros and cons.Ĭontrary to popular belief, Flexi-time does not grant employees absolutely free discretion to work at “anytime” they please. Here, the employee can go to work at any time within the prescribed hours, as long as he finishes his tasks and adheres to the minimum number of working hours. There has been a recent trend locally, where certain employers are implementing the Flexi-time work schedule. With the proper use of time, the employee can better balance his work and life routine, catch up with friends and family, or cultivate his other passions. After January 15, remote access, security updates, and technical support will no longer be provided. Of course, the company reserves the right to change this policy in the face of security concerns, which is the current situation. This is runs counter to Western Digital's Product Lifecycle Support Policy, which promises standard updates for products for up to eight years. As a result, we've determined that it’s necessary to end support for prior generations of My Cloud OS, including My Cloud OS 3 and WD Cloud OS 2.' As a note, there is no My Cloud OS 4. We continuously evaluate and improve our hardware, software, and services as security standards evolve. WD writes, 'Western Digital strives to provide reliable and trustworthy storage solutions for businesses and consumers alike. It appears that WD is simply ceasing support for devices with specific security risks rather than undertake the arduous task of updating device compatibility for the latest update. A couple of weeks later, it became clear that a similar security risk affected additional Network Attached Storage (NAS) hard drives. In June, we wrote about a vulnerability with My Book Live devices that resulted in some users losing their data. My Cloud OS 5 released in March of this year and includes major security updates to address vulnerabilities. I tried searching specific ETF tickers, but that yielded no results. Here you can search for specific stocks to see if they are included in any of the ETF options. To search for a particular stock, click the search button in the upper right-hand corner. You will need to have funds deposited into your Stash account before you’re able to make any purchases ( Figure 4). To invest in a particular category or ETF, click Add to Portfolio. Clicking the question mark will bring you to the definition of the term. The tab also displays other investment ideas based on your risk profile.Įvery metric on each tab has a small question mark. You can also click “follow friends” to see if anyone in your contacts list is using Stash and what they are investing in. The “Who Owns It?” subtab shows the percentage of the Stash community with your chosen level of risk that is investing in that particular security. The page lists the latest price, one day change, and year-to-date change. The Performance subtab shows performance of the security over the last one, five and 10 years as well as since-inception return on a chart. The second main tab, Discover, has three subtabs: Overview, Performance and “Who Owns It?” The Overview page includes a brief description of the fund style, risk level (conservative, moderate, aggressive), top portfolio holdings, the underlying security (typically an ETF), the ticker symbol, dividend yield and expense ratio ( Figure 3). Categories may include Data Defenders, which represents a cybersecurity ETF, or Small but Mighty, which represents a small-cap ETF ( Figure 2). Instead of listing individual fund names, Stash lists categories. The presentation of different investment vehicles is different than you might expect. The Ideas subtab shows recommended investments based on the information input during setup. Based on your estimated monthly deposit and annual return, the app displays what you could potentially earn over the next year, five years and 10 years. It uses compounding concepts and is accompanied by a calculator where users can input their potential monthly deposit and growth potential (expected annual return). The Potential subtab is designed to show users the potential growth of their portfolio over time. Users can quickly invest money from the Balance tab by clicking “make a deposit” or check their historical transactions by clicking “view account history.” The Balance subtab displays your account balance over time, including deposits and withdrawals. The Portfolio page displays your holdings and pending transactions. The My Stash tab contains four different subtabs along the top: Portfolio, Balance, Potential and Ideas. The home screen displays three main tabs at the bottom: My Stash, Discover and Account. Once you get past the setup (which didn’t require me to verify who I was via email) and fund your Stash account ( Figure 1), you can choose additional investments. When you click “get started” there are three steps to follow: Create your profile, select your first investment (from a list based on your chosen investing style, from conservative to aggressive) and verify your identity. Each month, there could be a new committee elected.Įvery time I use the comic life application I learn new and exciting things to encompass in my execution of the program. To limit the amount of teacher work, the class could elect a "comic editing committee" which would be responsible for publishing the class poster. This would serve as a wonderful way for students to review what they have learned and also take pride in their accomplishments during the school year. The posters could be displayed on a class bulletin board. *I also really like the idea Skip shared of taking pictures throughout the week in class and then designing a poster that incorporates the learning activities for the week. *Use as a tool with very young children and perhaps students with special needs to go over upcoming events (field trips, guest presenters, new routines, etc.) and the expected routines and rules so students can anticipate what to expect. *Academic Uses: create a poster that illustrates phases of the moon, describes the elements of a particular habitat, demonstrates the stages in a life cycle of a butterfly, etc. *Use as a team building activity by having teams create posters including a team name, pictures of teammates, and team colors. We could use the poster to begin class meeting the following week as a means to review the previous week's discussion. Two students could then be the designated "comic editors" and create a comic illustrating what the class discussed during the weekly class meeting. It would be great fun to have students role play and act out different rules, incidents on the playground, and other social contexts each week. Class meetings are a designated time for class building, developing social skills, and discussing rules and any problems or issues that arise throughout the year with students in the class. For older students, I would have them take pictures at home and then bring them into school to upload on the laptops.Īnother way I see incorporating this into a classroom setting is during class meetings. Classmates would then have to guess to whom each poster describes, and really get to know information about their peers in the process. Another fun idea would be to have the kids take pictures of objects that describe them and not include pictures of themselves. When finished with this project, we could print them off and after sharing them, make a class bulletin board or post them around the room for our parent open house which takes place the first few weeks of school. Students would then work with their buddies to create a comic life poster. With primary students, I would most likely have them work with their buddy class (usually 5th or 6th graders) to take pictures of things that describe them (what they like to do, their favorite book to read, favorite subject in school, etc.). Next year, I would like to try to do this assignment with my students as a "get to know you" activity at the beginning of the year. I enjoyed the creativity in selecting my own personal pictures to illustrate and tell a story behind a specific place. I'm glad I had the experience of getting to use this program again in ED 329 under a different context. It was wonderful to see the enormous growth this student made from creating and reviewing these social stories. He was even more thrilled with looking at himself in each picture which allowed him to take ownership in his learning and be more engaged in the learning process. This particular student was so engaged in the entire process of taking pictures, editing the clips, and designing captions. I was amazed to see the strength of this tool when applied in this kind of personal context. Some of the topics we addressed in different social stories included raising his hand before speaking and not interrupting, following the five steps to good listening, asking a friend to play a game, and his morning routine upon first arriving in the classroom. Each comic ended with a picture of the student being positively reinforced for making good choices. In his comic, we included pictures of the student interacting in different social scenarios. Last year I created social stories for a student in my class who is autistic. This was my second time using comic life for university coursework. pick up materials on-site at the Circulation Desk or request that items be sent to your office (See Pick up and Delivery Options for more information.).request materials in person, over the telephone (51), via fax (51), via email at or through Excelsior, the NYSL online catalog. These borrower's cards begin with a "P" number. If so, please share in the comments below.I’ve got a bunch of requests on how I use Notability for my notes, so I thought I’d do up a quick tutorial. Synced notes can be saved as RTFs, PDFs, or. This lets you keep backups of your notes that you can access from any Internet-connected computer. It lets you sync your notes with the same four cloud services that are listed as import options. Tap the gear icon in the lower-right corner to access the settings, the most notable of which is Auto Sync. Lastly, you can access settings when you're in Notability's library view. Moving in the other direction, the import button on the right lets you import PDFs from Dropbox, Box, iDisk, and WebDAV. When in library view, the share button on the left lets you e-mail or print a note or send it to Dropbox, Box, iDisk, WebDAV, or iTunes. You can also move documents into and out of Notability. You can also create a new note within a subject by tapping the "Create New Note" link below the existing notes in a subject. You can tap and hold to drag a note to a new subject. When in this library view, you can tap the button in the upper-right corner to create a new, unfiled note. You can also password-protect a note using this method. You can change the icon and color by tapping the edit button in the upper-left corner and then tapping the gear icon at the top of the right pane for a subject. (In Notability's organizational scheme, categories contain subjects, and subjects contain notes.) Each subject has an icon to the left and a color tab to the right. On the left pane are your categories and subjects, and on the wide right pane are your notes. Tap the library button in the upper-left corner of the screen to return to Notability's home screen. One lets you zoom in on an area of your note for finer control, and the other offers you a virtual and resizable palm rest should your palm interfere with your inking. Two buttons reside in the lower-right corner. These text boxes are handy because you can resize and reposition them on a note. The "+" button in the lower-left corner lets you add a photo, an image of a Web page, or text boxes of typed or written text. Three buttons sit at the bottom of the screen. One lets you create numbered or bulleted lists, and the other lets you change the style, size, and color of your font. The most helpful of theses buttons are the two in the middle. Notability uses the standard iPad keyboard, but places a row of its own buttons along the top. Tap the paper-icon button to the right of the tool buttons in the menu bar to select a paper type - color choices along with it being blank, lined, or grid-lined. You can customize the look of a note by tapping on either the pencil or highlighter tool button to choose the size of the point and color. There is also a microphone button that lets you record voice memos to attach to a document. To the immediate left of these tools buttons are undo and redo buttons. At its center are five tools buttons, which let you choose to type, write, highlight, erase, or select a section to cut, copy, delete, or restyle. In summary, a menu bar runs along the top of the screen. When you first launch the app, it opens to a document titled "Welcome to Notability." It's an interactive guide that shows how to navigate the app. If your note-taking needs require both methods, I think you'll find a lot to like about Notability. This 99-cent app combines note-taking via keyboard of apps such as Drafts and Outline+ with the inking capability of a sketch app such as Paper. If you have been back in school and are still searching for the right note-taking app for your iPad, Notability brings a lot to the table, or desk in a lecture hall, as it were. |
